Most martial arts’ pioneers and practitioners teach and practice martial arts as procedures of self-defense and fighting. Therefore, we can argue that the main objective of learning and practicing martials arts is to know and be ready how to defend yourself against an aggressor. In other words, all types of martial arts try to answer the question of “how one can successfully defend oneself against attack by a bigger, stronger, and aggressive opponent”.

Although hand wraps add an extra layer of support and padding to trainees' hands and knuckle, which is good, the main objective of them is not to protect or pad you knuckle; instead, they are primarily used to provide a solid rock-like fist, by preventing fingers as well as knuckles sliding or breaking on each other while punching or blocking.

Initially the Brazilian jiu jitsu and Japanese one was the same, as the former originated from the later when, in 1915, a famous Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, went to Brazil, where he soon began teaching and giving demonstrations in jiu jitsu and judo. After him, three of his first students: Carlos, Helio Gracie, and Luiz França became the founders of what is known as Brazilian as they actively contributed to the development of this style of jiu jitsu, by maximizing the effectiveness of existing techniques, and creating new ones; giving rise to a distinct martial art.
