When someone decides to do some sort of boxing workout, whether taking a boxing class or just home-training personal exercise, the first thing he/she has to do is to get a pair of boxing gloves. However, choosing the right pair of boxing gloves could be challenging for newcomers, especially those who don’t have access to someone (couch, trainer, etc.) who can help them.
To make it easier, we strongly recommend going to a nearby boxing & martial arts supplies store and trying out different types and sizes. Because choosing the right boxing gloves depends on several factors, including your size, weight, skill level, and intended use. Additionally, bellow we list down some tips that would help you find the right boxing gloves:
- Size and weight: Boxing gloves come in various sizes and weights, ranging from 4 ounces to 20 ounces. The size and weight you choose will depend on your body weight, hand size, and purpose. If you are a beginner, it's recommended to start with 12 or 14-ounce gloves.
- Type of gloves: There are different types of gloves available for boxing, including sparring gloves, bag gloves, and competition gloves. Each type of glove has a different purpose, so choose the type that best suits your needs.
- Material: Boxing gloves can be made of various materials, such as leather, microfiber, synthetic leather, and vinyl. Leather is the most durable and expensive material, while synthetic leather and vinyl are less expensive but less durable.
- Closure: Boxing gloves can have either lace-up or Velcro closures. Lace-up gloves offer a more secure fit but take longer to put on, while Velcro gloves are quicker to put on but may not offer as secure of a fit. - Don't forget to put on some sort of hand wrap before trying out a boxing glove. Because hand wraps are an integral part of boxing work out as they not only provide protection to your hand, but also to your gloves. Please refer to this blog on hand wraps and their benefits.
Overall, it's important to choose boxing gloves that fit well, offer adequate protection, and are appropriate for your intended use. Consider these factors carefully before making a purchase.
